19th Century English Cordite Case with Coat of Arms

A handsome 19th century English cordite case with leather carries strap, lid, and a coat of arms on the front. Nice heavy strap for carrying and top leather strap. No locking strap has been broken off. Made of painted canvas. Very nice quality. Cordite was developed for military use at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich and at the Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills, from 1889 onwards. Cordite is a product of smokeless propellants made by combining two high explosives: nitrocellulose and nitro-glycerine, it is a double-base propellant. Cordite is classified as an explosive, but it is normally used as a propellant for guns and rockets. This surviving ‘bucket’ is in good condition and makes a fine decorative item. 1900s-1920s
