19th Century English Mahogany Commode signed “Gillows”
An elaborate solid mahogany commode with bombé shape and shaped front. This piece is signed “Gillows” and made with precision. The commode has a center set of three drawers and two doors and two drawers flanking the center set of drawers. Fine rococo hardware gives a look of elegance. The corners of this commode are as striking in person, as they are in the photograph. Fine carved details from sunflower to leaf patterns, carved from a block of mahogany. When looking at the corner your eye will lead down to the strong looking hairy paw feet. Well carved indeed. The top is shaped to compliment the base and made of a solid board of mahogany. This top has a beautiful wood grain, ribbon cut. There is a trim which surrounds the top. Shaped sides with moldings on figured mahogany. Notice how the back legs and post are carved with precision another sign of the quality applied in making this piece. The finish is a fine French polish perfect to add depth to the beauty of the wood. The drawer is stamped “Gillows” a notable English cabinetmaker.
